Notes
A survey of specific local charities and their associated customary events. It includes well known examples such as the Dunmow Flitch of Bacon and the Biddenden Maids' Charity and various rush strewings, but also describes many which have now probably fallen into abeyance or been merged into other more general funds. Examples include those at Burford and Canterbury for encouraging maidservant, others for funding officials to whip dogs out of church and to awaken sleepers during services and not to mention charities in connection with plum cake land, figs and ale and wine to cheer the heart. All the examples have been extracted from the various printed reports issued by the Commissioners for Inquiring into Charities in England and Wales, issued 1817-50
