Notes
Twenty moral stories for children. Some praise good children like Cecilia and Fanny. 'always obedient to their mamma's commands, kind to the servants, and obliging to every body'; others are scolded for their bad behaviour like Maria, 'the little slattern,' who is always ruining her clothes and toys and hence is not allowed to go on a family outing. The authorship has been disputed and sometimes attributed to Elizabeth Sandford, but Elizabeth Semple is generally considered to be the author of Summer Rambles mentioned on the title page. The original owner may have been one of the Earls of Coventry (Six of whom were called George William), although none was a child very close to the date of publication. The title was published in editions from 1804-18 and is scarce in the original.
