Notes
A survey of the nature and structure of human skin precedes a detailed account of the efficacy of the author's two devices, manufactured by his Patent Epithem Company. The spongio piline was of wool and small particles of sponge, apparently felted together and attached to an india rubber skin. It retained heat and kept moist poultices close to the skin. Alfred Markwick (1826-91) gained his MD in 1843 and FRCS in 1859. He converted to homeopathy and became physician at the London Homeopathic Hospital. Markwick was also Surgeon to the Western German Dispensary; Member of the Parisian Medical Society, and formerly Externe to the Hopital du Midi, Paris. He submitted cases and articles to The Lancet and to various homeopathic publications.
