Notes

This map, something of a cartographic curiosity, is in effect a bird's eye view from an imaginary high spot on the North bank of the Thames, and was published in Bickham's book, The British Monarchy, which was a vehicle for him to display his skills in penmanship. He was a drawing master and principal exponent of penmanship in the eighteenth century. We have with this example the three pages of text that describe the county making it a particularly attractive example.
