Notes
William Rathbone (1747-1809) was a member of a prominent Liverpool merchant family and was brought up as a Quaker. He opposed slavery and war with France and was also in fundamental disagreement with some aspects of Quaker doctrine, taking a less rigid view towards mixed marriages and voluntary payment of tithes. His links with Unitarians and a dispute on the infallibility of scripture led to the controversy with the Irish Quakers described in A Narrative of Events. The publication of this led to Rathbone being disowned by the Hardshaw Monthly Meeting (St Helens) for expressing opinions contrary to the Friends' interpretation of scripture. as discussed in A Memoir. He did not appeal the decision but continued to worship occasionally with the Unitarians.
