The first edition of a guide reprinted several times in later editions. The list of officers is of great interest as it provides an overview of the customs, revenue and excise establishments all the way to the south, including Folkestone, Sandgate, Hythe, Romney Marsh and Dungeness, all controlled from the Custom House at Dover. Officials mentioned include the Coast Waiter, Tide Surveyors, Sloop and Cutter Commanders and Marines, Riding Officers, Boatmen and Tidesmen. Following the descriptions of the villages around Dover is an interesting description of the floating Goodwin Light. This is a good example of the pocket guide of Georgian times and scarce in any form; ESTC lists only five copies with three in the UK, at Bexley, Dover and the British Library and two in the US, at Princeton and Yale.
