Item Description
An old ledger, used as a scrapbook, containing, principally, newspaper cuttings, with 5 printed school magazines for Brenchley House, Sittingbourne, dated Summer Terms 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923 and Autumn Term 1924, and two printed lists for Prizes and Certificates for the County School for Girls, Sittingbourne. dated July 25th, 1921 and November 13th, 1924.
Notes
The scrapbook was compiled by Katie Kingsnorth using an old accounts ledger. Inscribed at the front thus 'This book and all it contains belong to Katie E. Kingsnorth - Bobbing' [Kent]. In a later inscription in the same, but a more mature, hand is the following - 'born July 15th 1906 at Lamberhurst, Kent. Removed, in 1910, to Key Street, Nr Sittingbourne. Educated at County School for Girls, Sittingbourne 1917 - 1923.'
The contents to a large extent reflect her time at the County School with a number of articles about Speech Day, Sports Day, Empire Day, a performance of the play 'Of Mice and Men', etc., for various years. These are interspersed with topical articles about local history and events, such as archaeological discoveries, fires, the obituary of the Rev. Baring-Gould; the Royal Family, some national sporting events including the Varsity boat race, and a Solar Eclipse. Where the publication can be identified, the majority of cuttings originate from the East Kent Gazette. Also pasted in is what appears to be an advertisement for a souvenir postcard commemorating the dropping of bombs by an enemy aircraft on Faversham, Sittingbourne and Sheppey on April 16th, 1915. This is in the form of the postcard and an integral strip above the postcard showing details of the raid, the only victim (a bird) and the cost of 1d. A number of cuttings are loosely inserted as is a family photograph, dating from the 1920s, that may be of the Kingsnorth family. An evocative item of useful reference.
