Notes
First published in instalments in the Cosmopolitan (New York) in 1892-93, it appeared in book form in both the US and Edinburgh in 1894. This critique of unrestrained capitalism is set on the east coast of the US, where a traveller from the Utopian island of Altruria is visiting to see how American democracy and equality works in practice. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was a US poet, critic and realist novelist who settled in Cambridge, MA.
