A pioneering study on obstetric physiology with chapters on puerperal fever and puerperal insanity. The author also includes long appendix, Is the Plague a contagious Disease? which he admits 'has nothing to do with the title or the object of this volume.' Robert Gooch from Yarmouth graduated MD at the University of Edinburgh in 1812 and, after the death of his first wife and child, moved to London in 1812, to specialise in obstetrics. He became physician to both the Westminster and London Lying-in Hospitals for the poor, his publications, carefully based on his case notes continuing to remain influential.
