Between 1815 and 1827 Prout published a series of important papers on urine and digestion that opened up the areas of purine and metabolic chemistry. In 1821 Prout published athis concise textbook on urine. Prout was among the first to divided food components into fats, carbohydrates and proteins. This work led to his discovery that the gastric juice contains free hydrochloric acid.
