Notes

A large scale, eight miles to the inch, hand coloured map of England, Wales, and Southern Scotland published in 1824. It indicates clearly the various categories of roads and the navigable waterways. John Cary (1755-1835) was a London cartographer, engraver, globe maker and publisher, considered by many to be one of the finest of his day, known for his high standards and continuous edition improvements. This copy was formerly owned by Jane Elizabeth Digby, Lady Ellenborough (1811-81), who earlier achieved a scandalous reputation for the number of her husbands and lover, although she spent the last twenty eight years of her life married to an Arab Sheikh in Damascus.
