'By-product' essays arising from the author's Science and Civilisation in China project (commenced 1954 and still ongoing after twenty seven volumes). These lectures, addresses and previously printed journal articles cover such topics as East and West cultural contact and transmission, astronomy and meteorology, metallurgy, engineering (including the steam engine), nautical technology, alchemy, chemistry, pharmacy and medicine. Joseph Needham (1900-95) originally a biochemist changed his research orientation to China after three Chinese scientists came to Cambridge in 1937. One of them Lu Gwei-Djen (1904-91), a contributor to this volume, taught him Chinese and later became his wife after a long relationship.
