Notes
This title reprints the first successful work, the novel, Le Pied de Fanchette (1769) of the prolific author, Nicolas-Edme Rétif, better known as Rétif de la Bretonne (1734-1806). His works, combining social fantasy and graphic sexual realism illuminate French society on the eve of the Revolution. The French word for shoe fetishism, retifism, is derived from his name and the title of this novel suggests that it is a theme of it. This edition includes an historical and bibliographical account of the author and his works, by the editor, Octave Uzanne (1851-1931), a famous bibliophile, writer, publisher and journalist, whose research covered eighteenth century authors.
