Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-73) was an English politician and best-selling novelist. These two parts were originally published separately, Ernest Maltravers in 1837 and its sequel, Alice in 1838, with a joint edition first appearing in 1840. This title typifies Lytton's novels, portraying his hero's 'apprenticeship to politics, literature, and love,' and is 'filled to overflowing with the grand passions, romantic adventures, and philosophical disquisitions' that came to characterise his fiction (DNB). Although second only to Dickens in popularity in his time, Lytton's extravagant style and moralising seemed out of place in the twentieth century. A handsomely bound set.
