Notes
Henty's story is in twelve parts on pages beginning 38, 77, 118, 182, 212, 279, 315, 375, 416, 442, 521, 563 (in spite of the note on the contents page it is not illustrated). This annual is likely to be its first appearance, as shown by the lack of illustrations, which were evidently only available for the book, which was also published in 1886 (Dartt, p. 60-1.). In addition to the Henty story, the Annual also contains serials by R. M. Ballantyne and Jules Verne. An illustrated feature, The Modern Seven Wonders of the World, includes the telephones of Edison and Graham Bell and Edison's phonograph.
