4to. 9.75 x 7.75 inches. viii + [2] + 276 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, boards decorated by blind stamping. A little wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine. Flyleaves and edges browned, but otherwise a very good copy. Bookseller's label of W. J. Sackett, Bull St. Birmingham. Early signature and initials on first free endpaper. Illustrated by two tables of alphabets and by table in text. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A grammar of Old Testament Hebrew. Translation of the author's Hebraische Grammatik of 1813, a companion to his Lexicon of 1810-12. Wilhelm Gesenius (1786-1842) was a German Biblical scholar, lexicographer and orientalist and professor at the University of Halle. Enlarged by Emil Rodinger (1801-74) of the same University. Benjamin Davies (1841-75) was a Welsh Hebrew scholar. He returned from Leipzig after obtaining his Ph.D thesis and was ordained in London in 1838, subsequently holding a number of academic posts in London and Canada. An undated edition of Samuel Bagster, a firm specialising in polyglot bibles, which also published the Lexicon of Gesenius, probably in the 1850s.
