Notes
Several very similar editions of Goulden's Guide appeared around 1897-98 but this version has an advertisement dated 1898 at the rear and thus corresponds to Goulden 118 of 1898. The first guide published by Charles Goulden (1813-88) appeared about 1840 and the business was taken over by Henry James Goulden (1850-1937) by 1870. In the last two decades of the nineteenth century the Goulden guide reigned supreme, until it was swept aside by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce's own penny guide from 1904.
