Notes
Several very similar editions of Goulden's Guide appeared around 1893-94, but this version, with the building as the last advertisement before the title page and the variations to the pianoforte advertisement on the rear cover, appears closest to Goulden 112 of c.1894. The first guide published by Charles Goulden (1813-88) appeared about 1840 and the business was taken over by Henry James Goulden (1850-1937) by 1870. In the last two decades of the nineteenth century the Goulden guide reigned supreme, until it was swept aside by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce's own penny guide from 1904.
