Although undated, it would have appeared in the decade after about 1835. The first edition was published by Edward Lacey and this, slightly later version, is by the successor of this concern, Thomas Holmes. This little educational book is a miscellany of interesting facts and quaint observances from around the world. For Britain there are sections on Mayday, Twelfth Night and Midsummer Eve customs and an account of the then unknown practice of 'Dressing the Christmas Tree in Germany... Would not the Christmas-tree be a pleasant addition to our juvenile amusements?' No doubt some of the accounts of executions and the like would not be considered appropriate for today's children but they were obviously held to be more robust two hundred years ago.
