Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. The Queen Caroline affair, relating to Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of the new King, George IV, who returned to England in an unsuccessful attempt, despite much popular support, to take up her position as Queen still continued to preoccupy Parliament. At the East Kent Quarter Sessions, Anthony Marchant was found guilty of receiving quantities of stolen silk, serge and linen and was sentenced to two years in Maidstone Gaol. Awaiting trial in the same institution was an individual who had attempted 'to commit an unnatural crime at the parish of Hawkhurst.' Materials of the old, demolished, County Gaol were listed in detail and offered for sale by auction.
