Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn, hop and other commodity prices at the London markets and Canterbury. Overseas news gives a detailed relation of the loss of the troop transport, Harpooner, sailing from Quebec for Deptford and wrecked off the coast of Newfoundland. A paragraph relates 'a most daring highway robbery on the turnpike to Leatherhead where a miller retuning fro Epsom races is robbed of his cash, watch and pocket book containing sixty pounds in Bank of England and country notes. The accidental exchange of hats between the victim and one of the robbers seems to have led to their apprehension. In Kent the owners of the wreck of the Lord Somers stranded about three miles eastward of Folkestone are offering a three hundred guinea reward for the conviction of those who set her and her cargo on fire.
