Notes

Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices at the London markets and Canterbury. In overseas news a Russian squadron has arrived at Calais to embark a part of their army of occupation in France. At home there was a boiler explosion on the Richmond steam packet causing shocking injuries to a crewman and parliament debated a bill to suspend Habeas Corpus. In Kent tolls were to be let on the Biddenden to Cranbrook turnpike road and there was an attempt by persons in Folkestone to purchase the catch of a French fishing boat off Hythe with valueless one pound notes issued by a long bankrupt firm. A change in the weather has 'wonderfully improved our agricultural prospects.' 'The late continued rains...with a temperature too low and chilling for the season,' had followed on from the dire season of 1816, the year without a harvest, now known to have been caused by the eruption of Tambora in 1815.
