Notes

The original La Gazette de Cythère was a collection of erotic tales in French of 1774-75, alleged to have translated from the English and purporting to be published in London. It is generally attributed to François Bernard and may have been printed in the Netherlands. At the end it includes the Histoire de Mademoiselle Brion dite Comtesse de Launay. This 1881 version includes an historical and bibliographical account of the original work by the editor, Octave Uzanne (1851-1931), a famous bibliophile, writer, publisher and journalist, whose research included eighteenth century authors.
