4to. 10.5 x 8.5 inches. 125 pp. Text of introduction in double columns. In pictorial limp card wrapper. Some wear and creasing of wrappers, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by black and white photographs, including frontispiece. A collection of the photographs of Humphrey Spender (1910-2005), including his documentary images of working class life taken as part of the Mass Observation study of Bolton, 1937-40. Later photographs were taken for Picture Post magazine and of servicemen in wartime.
