Notes
A very early work on Herculaneum, describing and illustrating, for the first time, some of the antiquities discovered since systematic excavation began in 1739. Charles Nicholas Cochin (1715-90) and Jérôme Charles Bellicard (1726-86) were both engravers who worked in Paris. In 1750-51 they made a joint visit to the excavations of Herculaneum and also the neighbouring sites of Solfatara, the Campi Flegrei, Pozzuoli, etc. and the results of their travels are published in this book, which appeared in French in 1754 as Observations sur les Antiquités de la ville d'Herculaneum, with the first English edition having already appeared in 1753.
