TWO VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. Vol. I, xi + [i] + 320 pp.; Vol. II, vii + [i] + 309 + [1] pp. Bound from parts in contemporary half calf over marbled boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title labels, gilt. Volume II has traces of blue wrappers and stab holes from the original paper wrappers. Some scattered foxing, including flyleaves and some plate margins and versos; otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by 40 engraved plates, including 2 frontispieces. First edition of Dickens's penultimate novel, probably bound from parts as there are traces of the original wrappers, although reference sources state that these were green rather than blue. (Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth, p. 105-111).
