A 19th Century.36 calibre 'pepperbox' six barrelled pistol by T. J Wilkins of Banbury, 3inches case hardened revolving barrels, case hardened action bearing manufacturers name with scroll work engraving, chequered composite grips, 7.5 inches overall.
Notes
Although flint-lock firearms had been made in multi-shot form it was not until the advent of the percussion cap, which eliminated priming with loose powder for each shot, that revolvers became a really practical proposition.
The earlier ones were generally of the familiar 'pepper box' type where a group of barrels revolved around a central spindle. The barrels were usually bored out of a solid cylinder (as here), but some had separate barrels screwed into a large rotating breech block. Every barrel had a nipple at its breech and they were loaded and capped individually.
A formidable pocket-sized weapon.
