FIRST EDITION. 4to. 10.5 x 7.25 inches. xxi + [i] + 297 + [1] pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, spine with contrasting black title label, gilt, in price clipped dust wrapper which has some edge chips, sunned spine and foxing inside. Darkening of top edge and foxing of fly leaves, fore edge and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy with all plates clean. Illustrated by 10 text figures and by 192 black and white plates. History of English sculpture from the seventh until the mid-sixteenth centuries, by Lawrence Stone (1919-99), who later became a historian of the early modern period and developed the discipline of family social history. He taught at Oxford, 1947-63 and spent the rest of his career at Princeton. A volume in the Pelican History of Art series.
