Notes
Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), the famous Victorian illustrator, adopted the pseudonym of Phiz soon after he began collaborating with Charles Dickens in illustrating the serial publication of Pickwick Papers from 1836. It may have been chosen to harmonize with Boz, already selected by Dickens for himself, but there is also a possible reference to physiognomy, because of his ability in drawing faces. Phiz went on to illustrate another ten novels by Dickens before their working relationship ended. In his long career, he produced illustrations for many other writer's works and for periodicals, including Punch and The Illustrated London News from 1844-61.
