Folio. 13.75 x 10 inches. [114] pp. letterpress. Bound in contemporary half red leather, gilt, over green boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting black title label, gilt. Extremities worn, including head and tail of spine, scattered foxing throughout, largely confined to margins and blank rectos of plates; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 50 steel engraved portrait plates, engraved by D. J. Pound from photographs by Mayall, including portrait frontispiece. A collection of fifty fine steel engravings of notable mid-Victorian figures, especially politicians, accompanied by biographical accounts. The subjects are: Queen Victoria, The Prince Consort, Lord Palmerston, Earl Russell, William Gladstone, The Earl of Carlisle George Howard, Lord Stanley, Richard Cobden, John Bright, Sir Hugh Mac Calmont Cairns, Baron Westbury, Earl of Elgin, Marquis of Lansdowne, Lord Brougham, Lord Wodehouse, Viscount Bury, Sir George Cornwall Lewis, Lord Panmure, Samuel Warren, Charles Gilpin, Sir John Lawrence, William Scholefield, Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan, Peter John Locke King, John Walter, Lord Lyndhurst, The Earl of Shaftesbury, James Whiteside, Henry Singer Keating, Serjeant Shee, Lord Ebury, John Arthur Roebuck, The Marquis of Salisbury, Joseph Warner Henley, Mathew Talbot Baines, George John Douglas Campbell, Lord Macaulay, The Duke of Cambridge, Justice Haliburton, Lord Berners, John Somerset Packington, Frank Crossley, The Earl of Aberdeen, Lord Campbell, Lord Chelmsford, Charles Ashe Windham, Thomas Slingsby Duncombe, Benjamin Disraeli, Fitzroy Kelly. The work may be dated to 1862 because of the reference to the death of the Prince Consort, 'Last year,' in the dedication. There is no title page or indication of publisher, but it may be speculated that it was a version of the title suggested above. Certainly it has the same combination of Pound and Mayall as illustrators. It could have been a bound up version of a part work, as The Drawing-Room Portrait Gallery appeared in a number of volumes, 1859-62. The engravings are by Daniel John Pound (1820-94), who sometimes worked from the photographs of John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1813-1901), art photographer, known for his royal portraits (but also of Karl Marx, 1875) and popularisation of the carte-de-visite format.
