Vol. I contains The History of Heraldry, The Different Degrees of Nobility and Gentry, Royal Arms, Badges, etc., The Several Orders of Knighthood, The Armorial Ensigns of Counties, Cities, Boroughs, Towns Corporate, etc followed by the Alphabet of Arms, Aaron to Haningfield. Vol. II concludes the sequence from Hanington to Zymon and Vol. III the Glossary, Mottos belonging to this Work, Appendix of Additions and Corrections and the engraved plates, including the separate sequence of orders of knighthood, with arms of subscribers at the end. This three volume work is regarded as the major achievement of the Sunderland engraver Thomas Robson, who was also well known for his local maps and established a family business in the town. The History of Heraldry and the Glossary were also issued as separate publications.
