Notes
A translation of 'the third and last edition' (a fourth appeared in 1821) of Blumenbach's Institutiones physiologicae of 1810 (first edition 1787), by Elliotson whose own translated edition was first published in 1815. The Institutions served as a useful compact survey of human physiology. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), physician, physiologist, naturalist and anthropologist, was Professor of Medicine at the University of Göttingen from 1778. He became well known for his theories on the different human races, developing Meiners' usage of the term, Caucasian (1785) for the white races. His ideas are expounded in the last chapter of this title, Varieties of Mankind. The translator, John Elliotson (1791-1868) became Professor of Medicine at University College, London, 1832 and Senior Physician at University College Hospital, 1834. He was a pioneer of the use of the stethoscope and the practice of acupuncture in Britain. This copy was a gift from Sir George Henry Makins (1853-1933), who specialised in wound surgery and was Consulting Surgeon during the South African and First World Wars.
