Item Description
Steel engraving, 4 x 5 inches, printed on India paper, laid onto thicker paper. In pencil below the platemark is written 'With R. Williamson best regards to Rev. Dr. Wiseman.
Notes
This amazing piece of engraving was the work of Mr. Williamson, who is showing off his credentials as a security printer. It seems rare and I cannot trace another example. He has engraved a very Catholic design for his superhuman job of engraving, and for Dr. Nicholas Wiseman, who was the recipient. Wiseman was an influential Irish Catholic who in May 1836, having been made a Cardinal, founded with Daniel O'Connell a new journal. It was entitled 'The Dublin Review', a magazine devoted to Irish topics, political, social, educational, or literary.
