FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. [iv] + 303 + [1] pp. Bound in dark green cloth, gilt, with black decorative borders on boards. Extremities worn with small tear on edge of front board. Top edge darkened and flyleaves and title page browned; otherwise a very good copy. 1878 and 1929 signatures on first free endpaper. An account of the plants quoted in the works of Shakespeare, arranged alphabetically, with each entry starting with the appropriate quotations from the works. These notes were originally published in The Garden, 1877. Part II on the The Garden Craft occupies twenty pages at the end and the appendix reprints an earlier article on The Daisy. Born in Bitton and ordained in 1847, Ellacombe (1821-1916) was a distinguished plantsman, who grew a wide range of plants in his vicarage garden at Bitton, succeeding his father as vicar in 1850. Scarce first edition; several later editions were published.
