Illustrated by 8 pages of black and white photographic plates and by genealogical table. Decorated by contents pages and chapter heading vignettes. Biography of Algernon Sidney (1623-83), brought up at Penshurst Place, Kent, colonel in the Parliamentary army during the Ciivil War, elected MP for Cardiff in the Long Parliament in 1645, republican politician and political theorist, in exile, 1660-77. After a trial for treason under Judge Jeffreys in 1683, he was condemned to execution for his republican writings (his most famous work, the Discourses concerning Government was not published until 1698).
