Notes

An anti-French pamphlet based on linking the occurrences of the Book of Revelation to the history of the rulers of France by means of a system of numerology, and equating Bonaparte to the Beast. Lewis Mayer (1738-1849), a prophetic writer, wrote several similar works. Some of his other titles, including Peace with France, and Catholic Emancipation repugnant to the Commands of God, are listed on the back page. According to Semmel, a version of the first edition of 1803 in the British Museum's collections has an engraved frontispiece. There is, however, no evidence that other copies (quoted in catalogues or available online) of the 1803 editions, both first and second, nor this third edition were illustrated. This is a very rare title and in Britain only the British Library and Edinburgh hold copies of the second and third editions. World Cat records a handful of other libraries holding the 1803 editions, Göttingen, Madison and Canberra, with this 1806 edition being held in Atlanta, Milwaukee, Austin and Paris.
