Philip Henry Gosse (1810-88) was a zoologist, field naturalist and religious writer who made a living from his writings, including studies of Canada and Jamaica. He became by the 1850s, one of the leading popularisers of natural history in Britain. The first edition of the Second Series was published in 1861.
