Notes

First published in 1780, the early issues of this little guide, have very eccentric pagination and many cancel pages but by the time of this 1801 edition, the print layout had become much more regular. This copy corresponds closely to Goulden 17, with thirteen plates and includes the 14 pp. 'A list of rare plants found in the Neighbourhood of Tunbridge Wells' at the end printed in London by W Thorne, which is extra to the guide but there are other copies noted by Goulden which include it. A very attractive Tunbridge Wells guide with a fine collection of copper engravings, paying particular attention to the major sites of interest in the locality including country seats, which are described in detail with lists of paintings (e.g. at Knowle and Mereworth House). This copy was owned by Sir David Lionel Salomons, 2nd Bart. (1851-1925), Mayor of Tunbridge Wells in 1895 and early motoring pioneer and campaigner.
