Notes
The Works of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) are edited by his close friend and executor, Edmond Malone (1741-1812). Malone, literary scholar and biographer, was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, but settled in London from 1763. He became the most significant 18th century editor and scholar of Shakespeare and also edited Dryden. His biography of Reynolds occupies the first 120 pages of Volume I. Following the fifteenth of Reynold's Discourses in Volume II are his brief contribution to the journal, The Idler in 1759 and his account of monuments and works of art in Flanders and Holland. Volume III prints the Latin original of 'De Arte Graphica/The Art of Painting' by Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy (1611-1688), translated into English verse by William Mason (1725-97) and extensively annotated by Reynolds. An appendix contains Du Fresnoy's 'Sentiments on the Principal and Best Painters of the Two Last Ages', with the long preface by John Dryden (1631-1700) and the Epistle by Alexander Pope (1688-1744) to Mr. Jervas, who corrected Dryden's translation of Du Fresnoy. At the end is 'A Chronological List of Painters' (from Cimabue until about 1700) by Thomas Gray (1716-71).
