8vo. 7.5 x 5.5 inches. viii +[ii] + 313 + [1] pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt. Lower page edges rough cut. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Some foxing of edges, but otherwise a very good copy. 1931 signature on front pastedown. Criticism and interpretation of modernist English culture covering poetry, novels, painting and music. Separate chapters are devoted to writers of literature, T. S. Eliot (two chapters), Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Wyndham Lewis, The Three Sitwells, Lytton Strachey and Virginia Woolf; contributors include Edgell Rickword, Peter Quennell and William Empson, with contemporary music by Constant Lambert. Volume I of Scrutinies was published in 1928 and the series proved to be very influential, contributing to the founding of the journal, Scrutiny by F. R. Leavis and others in 1932. Edgell Rickword (1898-1982) was a war poet, leading literary figure of the day and later Communist intellectual.
