The contents of this selection of twenty six tracts in the English Garner series include mostly English voyages of trade, travel and exploration. The long account of the voyage of Jan Huyghen van Linschoten to Goa has a brief relation of Sir Richard Grenville's last fight in the Revenge in the Azores, 1591. Other documents cover the first, second and third voyages of John Hawkins, a narrative of Drake's Nombre de Dios expedition of 1572-73, the English Levant trade and the retaking of the island of St Helena, some of them being taken from Hakluyt. These texts were reprinted from the eight volumes of the English Garner, 1877-90, by Professor Edward Arber (1836-1912). Charles Raymond Beazley (1868-1955), historian of early voyages, was Professor of History at the University of Birmingham, 1909-33.
